Except the sea, the vegetable
house to Chimei people is the second important thing for
residents to reply on. Almost every family has their own
vegetable house.
There are all basalts around inshore Chimei. Therefore the
residents use this rock material to pile up vegetable houses
different from the ones make of lao-ku stones in Magong Main
Island. Residents piled up vegetables against the rage of
strong North East monsoon. The planted vegetable can get
protection against the invasion of damages of wind and salt.
Winter is the invasion season of North East monsoon, and the
abundant production period of vegetables. Therefore building
vegetable houses can resist the wind. Among the produced
vegetables, they are mainly cabbage¡Bcauliflower¡Bbig
turnips¡BChinese cabbage¡BChinese
mustard¡Bspinach¡Bgreen
onion¡Bgarlic¡Blettuce¡Brape¡Bcelery¡Bhyacinth bean¡Bcarrot¡Bwhite
carrot¡Btomato etc. Among them, except general use,
cabbage¡BCauliflower and big turnips can be cut into pieces,
then put into glass bottles after they are dried, becoming
the food in summer when there are less vegetables or the
gift to relatives and friends.
Therefore, vegetable houses have become the essential for
the residents in daily life, and the feature of Chimei
culture circle. |
