Almost every family of Cimei residents keeps some poultry. Because residents are industrious and thrifty, they will feed chickens and ducks with leftover. They will also feed them with cut vegetable leaves they bring back home. They keep the chickens and ducks not only as their food, but also gifts to relatives, even for sale to earn some allowance. Generally, they do not kill female chickens (hens) for food or for sale, but keep them for production of eggs.
Native chickens in Cimei mostly come from locally born eggs then bred by female chickens (hens). Therefore, Cimei native chickens already have couples or hundreds of generations in Cimei. The born eggs are round and yellow with great nutrition, much different from the eggs selling in the market.
Most residents will not take Cimei locally born and bred eggs as their food unless for Chinese New Year or special festivals. The eggs are gifts for guests and food for sale. People who do not appreciate the value will wonder why they take the eggs which can be bought everywhere as gifts? Cimei locally born and bred eggs cost NT 8 each no matter how big it is. The general eggs selling in the market are NT 2 or 3 each. Even they are more expensive comparing with general eggs, they are so popular that could not be available without previous reservation!
