9 villages, 131 neighborhoods

It is located in the south area of Pengfu County about 23°12-23' N 119°18-59’ E with nearly forth islets and reefs.

This township has a lot of islets including six inhabited islets, the villagers make a life of fishery and sometimes of agriculture.  Due to the fishery resources is getting more and more exhausted along the coast, the villagers could not make lives easily. As a result, the population outflows seriously.  Besides, there are still some features: First, the islets distribute all over the township with a vast area in the width of 38 kilometers and length of 20 kilometers.  Second, the specialty-the highgrade mottle stones with the best quality are spread in Wangan and Jiangjunao.  Third, the pickup of Coral started from the fisherman of Wangan and Jiangjunao.  Fourth, the only Reservation area for Green Turtle to lay eggs and sojourn is bulletined to define six locations of the west and south coasts in Wangan Island. Fifth, the Seabird Protective Zone of Cats Islets of Pengfu County is situated in the southwest of this township which is the first wildlife protective zone all over the country.  Sixth, Zhongshe Village originally possessed a complete traditional residence; however, it was not preserved well.  World Memorials Foundation listed it as one of the 100 imminently dangerous excavations in 2003.

Xulongfu

Wangan island is the biggest island in Wangan Township, which has been called Bazhao island.  In the June of the 22^nd year of Kangxi period in Ching Dynasty (1683), the Commander of Navy in Fujian, Shiland, led more than two hundred of warships and anchored at Shuianao of Bazhao as a military base to defeat Liuguo and to occupy Taiwan. The district of Wangan Township has been called Wangan Bay, which was one of the nine bays in Pengfu formerly. Till the 5^th year of Yongzheng (1727), the court reestablished four bays. The district included Wanganao, Shuianao, Wangan Township and Chimei Township.  In the June of the 23^nd year of Kangxi period in Ching Dynasty (1684), Wanganao was under the control of 「福建省分巡台灣厦門兵被到台灣府台灣縣澎湖巡檢司」. In the 5^th year of Yongzheng (1727), it renamed 「福建分巡台灣道台灣府澎湖糧捕廳」. In the 11^th year of Guangxu period, the court established Bazhao Patrol Office of Pengfu Hall, Taiwan Fu (changed to Tainan afterwards).  In the period that Taiwan was under the control of Japanese Government, the organization of the administration was changed to Bazhaoao Affairs Office, Wangan Affairs Office, Wangan Office, Wangan Branch, Wangan Area,…etc.  Till the 9^th year of Dazheng Period (1920), Pengfu was subordinated to Pengfu Prefecture in Kaohsiung State.  Wangan Branch renamed WanganZhuang and went back to Wangan Branch in Pengfu Hall in the first year of Zhaohe (1926).  After Taiwan has restored, it renamed to Wangan Township. Originally, Wangan possessed ten villages; however, Xiji Village was moved in the July of 1978. Now, Wangan has nine villages.
