Lighthouse in Fisherman Island was
built in 1778 by the chiefman executive of Pengfu,
Xieweiqi, under the order of Jiangyuansu. This is
the first stone lighthouse in Taiwan which is in the
seventh level of Chinese Traditional Lighthouse. In
1828, the lighthouse rebuilt as an octagon stone
lighthouse in level seven. In 1875, it has been
re-constructed to be a Western-style, Circular, and
ironed lighthouse. The lamps for the lighthouse are
the lens-lamps in Level 4 and white-light lamps of
twin light buds lighted up by kerosene. There is a
dormitory built for the lighthouse keeper to stay
and supervise. In 1915, the lamps were changed to
high-pressure, white Flash Lamp lighted up by fuel
gas and were it altered to an incandescent lamp
lighted in 1938. In the 55th year of
R.O.C. Era, the lamps were re-quipped as the Level 4
rotatable lens lamps. In the 70th of
R.O.C. Era, the lamps were increased with two sets
of fog signals. |

The Lighthouse is located at the
highlands of Waian Village with a wide view. Around
the lighthouse is the wall built by laying old
stones about 60 centimeters tall. The wall is
painted white, the scope now is the same boundary as
it in the 11th year of Tongzhi Period in
Ching Dynasty and is shaped as a rectangle. The
length is about 50 meters from east to west and is
about 60 meters from south to north with the square
measure of approximate 0.3 hectare. The gate of the
lighthouse and its dorms all face southwards. The
whole constructions are divided into the western
lighthouse which is rebuilt in the first year of
Guangxu Peniod in Ching Dynasty, the dorms located
at the north side, and the underground reservoir.
Besides that, there are four dorms, electric
machinery room and the warehouse built continuously
later. Inside the lighthouse area is an ancient
cracked stele of Fuangxu and a western tombstone
built in 1880. There still are three fog cannons
inside the area: big, middle and small. The big and
middle ones are England-made, fore-chest and
cast-ironed fog cannons; the small one is
German-made hind-chest cannon. Furthermore, there
are two sets of fog-horns to replace the function of
fog cannon when the visible scope is shorter than
one hundred meters. |
