The first ancestor of Erkan villagers, Mr. Chenyanyi sailed across the sea from Xiaxing in Kingman (original called Xiakeng) about the last years of Wanli of Ming Dynasty.  He landed at Dachijiao (Now Dachi Village) first, then moved eastwards to the area of Guishanjiao in Zuiwan for fishing and cultivating.  Aftterwards his descendants and property increased gradually, he had to settle down the present place and formed a village of single surname of Chen.   After Guangxu, the descendants of Chen Family continually leaved for Taiwan for jobs.  Most of them served as an apprentice at the drugstore of Chinese herbal medicine.  Because they were so deligent and frugal, they accumulated some wealth and returned to their downtown to repair ancestral residences.  Erkan Residence of Chen Family was built by Chenling and Chenbang brothers in the first year before R.O.C. Era.  It takes two years to finish the construction.

Erkan Residence of Chen Family is a big building of Minnan style, it blended Minnan Architecture and the characteristics of Erkan villagers. This building is so beautiful with carved and painted beams.  People said that the residence was built at the “Cattle-navel Cave”. The distribution of the space for the gatehouse, living room and inner rooms were designed from the external to the inner side, which comformed to the conservative scheme and custom of bright and isolate living space.   The façade of Chen Residence was a triad, both sides extended to form a yard.  Later there was anothere yard added.  Besides, the owner built a dilated room with windows in the third countyard.  The size of the countyard is bigger than ordinary house due to request the well-proportion of the puffy scope.  Reportedly the material for the wall was the hard and solid basalt from Gupoyu, the decoration for the surface was exquisite and detailed 交趾燒, the clay sculpture was from Tangshan and the wood furnitures of the inner furnishings are very fastidious.  The designer was a twenty-one young master worker in Chidong.  Chen Residence could be the enlarged plate of Pengfu Old Residences.  The woodcarving, the stone carving, the painting  and calligraphy and colored patten are complete.
