The Liaowan Mountain of Houliao
is the highest point in Baisha with the height of 52 meters
above sea level. About 3 kilometers from western Liaowan
Mountain, Tachiting Mountain located in Tungliang is the
second highest mountain with a height above sea level of 31
meters. Four villages: Tingfeng Hsiajui, Chitou, Kangtzu,
Chenhai, Chiangmei and three villages: Tungliang, Houliao,
Watung on Baisha main islet are located along the west and
east coast embarrassing the bay.
Because it is located in shallow sea of continental shelf,
the water depth in nearby sea area is averagely less than 50
meters. Therefore, wave erosion platforms grow well around
all islands, and there are broad coral reef shelves. Also
because of this natural condition, measures of islands and
islets vary a lot during ups and downs. The sand alluvium in
Chihkan, Houliao, nearby offshore islets, and the south
coastline of Jibei Islet is particularly plenty. Dangerous
reeves and shoals after being piled up by gravel for years
and months have become a special landscape of sand islands.
Mudou islet is located on the North of Jibei Islet, the most
north island of Penghu County. It has Mudou lighthouse, the
highest lighthouse in Fareast area, established on the
islet.
There are Islets such as Birds Islet, Yuanpei Islet and
Paisa Islet located on the east of Paisa Island. Over there,
the cliff coast is prosperous and pillar basalts stand in
great numbers with clear edges.
On the most south end of Baisha Township, Chungtun Islet is
a 10-15 meters high independent small basalt island in
squared mountain shape. Its old name is Chungtun because the
shape is like a stone block, and it is the middle stop
between Penghu Main Island and Baisha Isaldn. |

geological description : |
|
Penghu archipelago is located on
the volcanic band of Pacific Ocean. The geology is mainly
basalts of volcanic lava. Baisha Township is one of the
Penghu volcanic archipelagos. The island and offshore
islands are approximately basalt base structure. In the
exposed sediment of basalts, there is limonite red tuff and
black gray sand, and the layers of limonite are all over the
island.
Northwest and Northeast Bay of Houliao, the north of
Chiangmei, Jibei and Tatsand, Dangerous Reef, Pengpeng shoal
are the sediments made of fragments of coral bodies, shells
and perforated worm’s shell along with sand and quartz.
Within the Township, it is all sand sticky soil except for
the sand soil on the north side of Jebei Islet and Birds
Islet. During the winder, the monsoon will scrape off the
surface soil. Therefore, the soil is losing and the soil
layer is too thin to grow woody plants. |
