This township is an
important area of production of Portunus pelagicus, the so called
sand crab, which have high economic value. They mainly perch on the
bottom of sand or reef rocks 20-80 meters under the water. During
reproduction period, they will go to shallower sea area for mating.
Young crabs can be caught on the sand bottom or rocks of flat tide
0-5 meters under the water. Male crabs and female crabs have very
different body color. Mature male crabs have mixed blue and purple
color streaks in cloud shape on the shell, and the streaks on the
shell of female crabs are in mixed light green and blue.
Sand crabs will distribute over the wide tidal flat of Baisha
Township during reproduction season. It is very often that people
can catch a pair of mature crabs. Penghu Branch of Fisheries
Research Institute once set free about dozens of hundred thousands
of sand crab offspring which was just hatched to the tidal flat of
Chenhai Village and investigated next year finding that the number
is multiply bigger than the last 2 years. This is also one of the
items for cultivating fishery that has the most remarkable
performance. |
