The
scientific name of Silver anchovy is Spratelloides
gracilis. The body is thin and long, slightly in
cylinder shape, flat on the front and back sides with silver
vertical strips. The whole body length can be 10 centimeter
long. It is a kind of fish from external ocean, and will
close to the coast during reproduction period. The inshore
of Penghu North Ocean area from the east of Chin Islet and
Kupo Islet to Dangerous Reef is an important fishing land of
Silver anchovy. Every year around Lunar March, mature female
Silver anchovy will swing back to the area of Penghu North
Ocean, reaching to an arenaceous sea area with seaweed
growing there to spawn. The incubation period is about a
month. In May, when the fish is a little bit bigger, people
call it little Ding and it will
become middle Ding in June and July, then big Ding in
August. After fall, Silver anchovy swing out of Penghu sea
area in groups again.
Silver anchovy is one of the main fisheries
in Chihkan. The rise and decline of Silver anchovy industry
also influences the increase and decrease of the population
of
the whole village. Nowadays Silver anchovy industry is not
as good as before. However, Chihkan fishing village is also
the village that catches the biggest amount of Silver
anchovy in Penghu. |
