In Chinese New Year Eve, the year end in Lunar
Calendar (Dec. 29th or Dec. 30th in great
month), people will select an auspicious period to pray to
Heaven God with gratitude to his whole-year protection. Before
the ceremony, family has to glue New Year couplets or auspicious
mottos on doors, windows, Buddha shrine, and cupboards, and
later pay respects to God respectively by ages, with
firecrackers once completion. From 12 Am to dawn, everywhere
is full of new year joys. In the afternoon, three kinds of
fowls and alcohols will be devoted to God, so call as ¡§Bid
Farewell¡¨ to symbol a good end of a year. In the evening, all
family gathers for New Year Eve Dinner, and children will be
given with ¡§red envelopes¡¨ of money after dinner to mean joyful
welcome to the coming year. |

The auspicious hours will be selected for God
praying. People have to shower, inside hallway below Heaven God
censor set a dedication table completed with censor, offering
box, red candles, left and right-side flower sets, five kinds of
meats, tea and alcohol, red rice balls, new year cake, golden
plum, ball cakes, cookies and candies, fruits, flowers, and
paper money, fire incenses to expel evils and stink, and pray
respectively by genders and ages, male and elderly first. All
family members hold three incenses to sincerely pray for God¡¦s
blessing, plug them in the censor, knee down for three times and
knock head for nine times, refill tea for three times, burn
paper money, pour tea or alcohol on burned ash for a circle, and
finally fire firework. In ¡§Bid Farewell¡¨ , three fowls,
alcohols, Chinese rice cake, and a full bowl of rice plugged
with a paper flower, so called as ¡§Cross-Year Rice¡¨ in front to
God, are all prepared, and fireworks are ignited once festival
completion. |
