Zhongyang Street is the earliest
commercial area and the main supply location of
living articles. There has been a distribution
of seven-street-one-city in Ching Dynasty. Zhongyang
Street was prosperous with great numbers of stores
at that time, such as rice store, fruit store,
salt store, blacksmith store and drugstore.
In the period under the control of Japanese Government,
it was schemed to be the business center in Makung.
Till the 60th year of R.O.C. Era, the traditional
bargains on Zhongyan Street were getting less
and less. More and more businesses have
been moving northwards. In the 73rd year,
Zhongyang Street was appointed to be the protected
historic spot; the buildings could not be changed
arbitrarily due to the limitation of laws and
decrees. The buildings were worn down by
the years without repair. People lived in ths
street were gone and the buildings were collapased.
In 2002, the Government allotted some budget to
rebuild the street-block. The original street
has gone into the history and left the memory
only. |
