The remainder of Ancient
City Wall was Shuncheng Gate, which was the little west
gate next to the main gate of Magong City Wall built in
the Guangxu Period of Ching Dynasty and was also the
preservative part of the city wall built in Ching
Dynasty. The conservation is still fine. In 1885, the
period of the war between China and France, France Army
has ever invaded Taiwan for three times but not
successful, so they led six warships to attack and
occupy Pengfu. The first Chief of Taiwan Province,
Liumingchuan considered that Pengfu is the key location
of South and North Ocean due to the lesson learned from
the war between China and France. Furthermore, the
Commander-in-chief, Wuhongluo, supervised and built
Magong City wall in 1887 and completed the construction
in 1889. Magong City Wall is the only castle after
Pengfu has established the government for more than 160
years. In the period of Japan-control, the government
dismantled the city wall at the south of the city and
the seaside in the southeast in order to build Makung
Port. After that, the north and east city walls were
demolished due the City plan. The scope of the present
city wall is about 700 meters, which is the one-fourth
of the original one. |

There were six gates
originally; they were East, West, South, North, Little
West and Little East Gates. During Japanese Occupation,
East, South, North and Little East Gates have been
dismantled continually and only remained West and Little
West Gates (Shuncheng Gate). Little West Gate is a
single-ridge style. There are city walls and bridle ways
remained at the side of the City Gate. It has been
repaired for many times since Japanese Occupation and
has lost its original appearance. Afterwards it was
designated as historic monuments and appeared its former
appearance through the assistance of the specialists and
the scholars. The perimeter of Magong Castle is about
2610 meters with the height of 6 meters and the
thickness of 8 meters. The city wall of it is the
thickest one in Taiwan. The flat surface seems like a
flat melon, long in east-and-west direction and short in
south-and-north. The construction of Magong was built by
surrounding Magong City. The finish of this construction
strengthens the military function; besides, the whole
block and streets were also inside the castle.
At first, the government office was located at Wenao,
which is with the distance of several miles from Magong;
as a result, the government moved Wenao General Office
to Magong Castle and made the union of the military
center, the economy center and the politic center in
Makung City. |
