中文摘要:位於台灣西南外海陸披上的澎湖峽谷具有三個源頭 , 並於水深 1400 公尺處匯集成單一的峽谷。此三源頭為緊密相鄰、南北走向的水道 , 其特徵為高起伏、兩壁陡峭、橫剖面呈 V 型。此峽谷不嵌入北方的大陸棚 , 同時也與現生的陸上河系無關。澎湖峽谷起源於高屏上部陸坡上的侵蝕凹槽 , 其成因可能是由於陡坡及地體活動造成坡度不穩定而崩塌形成。而後 , 塊體作用使得這些下切凹槽變深加寬 , 形成明顯的水道。這些水道再順坡下流匯合成單一的峽谷。澎湖峽谷及澎湖水道為兩個不同的實體 , 不應視為單一的海底地形物。
英文摘要: The Penghu Canyon on the continental slope off southwestern Taiwan consists of three distinct heads which coalesce in forming a single submarine canyon near the 1400m isobath. These heads are closely-spaced, N/S trending channels characterized by high relief, steep walls and a V- shaped cross-sectional configuration. This canyon neither indents the continental shelf nor has connections to the present river systems on land. The Penghu Canyon originated from the submarine gullies or incisions on the upper part of the Kaoping Slope. Upslope instability which was probably caused by oversteepness of the slope and inferred tectonic activities has resulted in the formation of incisions or gullies on the upper slope areas. The mass-wasting processes deepened and widened the gullies into distinct channels which in turn flowed downslope and coalesce in forming a single submarine canyon. The Penghu Canyon and the Penghu Channel are two different entities and should not be considered as being a single undersea feature.
