The purpose of this research work is to understand the engineering geological characteristics of basaltic residual laterite by experimental test and field investigation on the Penghu area. The results of the first step experimental test demonstrate that the main particle compositions of residual laterite are clay fractions, and the other distributions include silty clay and sandy clay. In general, the liquid limits range from 20.65% to 66.87%, and plastic limits range from 35.89% to 41.12%. The plastic index is around 11.57% to 24.41%, and activity is around 0.251 to 0.398. The main constitutions of clay minerals are kaolinite, smectite, illite and quartz. The results of field investigation show that the residual laterite has two different types and has following characteristics: Type (A): The residual laterite was leaching by basalt and volcanic material. The particle size of this laterite is more fine and has higher content on clay fraction. The laterization degree of this geomaterial is also higher and has high specific gravity. The geomaterial was classified the high plastic silt. The clay mineral compositions include kaolinite and smectite, and have higher free swelling grade. Type (B): The residual laterite was leaching by weathering sedimentary rock. The particle size of this laterite is more coarser and has low content on clay fractions. The laterization degree of this geomaterial is low and has low specific gravity. The clay mineral compositions include kaolinite, illite and have higher free swelling grade.
